Genesis Radio Founder Steps Down

At the beginning of last Sundays edition of The Peoples Talk Show on the 23rd January D Rowe the FounderCEO of the popular community radio station Genesis Radio can be heard on 91.6FM announced that he will be stepping down as the CEO of the station.
It came as a shock to not only myself but also the broadcasters who were present in the studio at the time.
I was in and out during the whole show however I will try to a breakdown of what was said whilst D Rowe was on the show.
He is passing the station on to a family member
He believes he has taken the station as far as he could and wants to get back to his first love Saxon Sounds.
Tired of the back biting and headache he has had to go through over the past 20 years in establishing Genesis Radio.
When he originally launched Genesis Radio in 1985 for a short period of time it was mainly to play music. He launched it officially in 1991 after being inspired by various information tapes of...

Torched Radio station forced off air by threats

Threats from local authorities and security forces which tried to take over its management forced a local radio station in Honduras temporarily to stop broadcasting on 14 January.
The station Radio Faluma Bimetu Radio Coco Dulce in Spanish belongs to the Honduran community of African origin Garifuna of Triunfo de la Cruz.
A delegation from the municipality of Tela backed by police officers turned up at the community on 12 January to impose a new handpicked board of management patronato.
The community of Triunfo de la Cruz had already planned a vote on 28 January to designate its future representatives. When the community refused to recognize the procedure threats were made to burn the station down.
The threat was a reminder of the arson attack that destroyed the station on 6 January 2010.
With the support of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters AMARC and International Media Support IMS Reporters Without Border...

Welcome to 2011
Welcome to 2011. A new year and a time to reflect on the last year as well as planning ahead.
Last Year
I will keep it brief. Though I am reasonably happy with the development I have made with the website as well as myself. I have to admit I have been a bit slack when dealing with some of the areas.
By now I would of hoped to have sorted out the logo and various other naging issues concerning the content i.e. textetc .
I hope to press on and deal with these issues early this year.

This year
Look out for the following

Lewisham councillor urges cops to use illegal pirate radio

Friday 24 September 2010
POLICE appeals should be broadcast on pirate radio stations to help crack criminal cases it has been claimed.
Lewisham Lib Dem Councillor Duwayne Brooks has urged police to start using the unlicensed stations.
Cllr Brooks 35 who is also Lewisham Community Police Consultative Group vice chairman made the call.
The Met has said raising awareness of crimes is a complex challenge but has ruled out using the stations because they are illegal.
But Cllr Brookes said The police talk about engagement with the community but what are they actually doing about it
They talk about Safer Neighbourhood Teams but the ward panels that meet arent representative of people in the borough.
I would like to see police appearing on these stations to get more in touch with the community and make appeals.
A range of stations broadcast illegally across South London often playing the latest dance music and attr...

We Remember Brother......... Spartacus R

Across history there have only been a few Pan African activists in the UK who are internationally known for their liberation works Spartacus R was definitely amongst this revered elite. Described by some as controversial for his trademark TruthSaying interventions he had a reputation for speaking up for the African masses irrespective of the status afforded his audience. Spartacus was sometimes viewed as capable of being disruptive when present in circles of stagnant speech or manipulative influence this led to some who were afraid of his words attempting to ban him speaking or being present at important community related proceedings. Galaxy 99.5 FM under attack
On Saturday 5th June during the afternoon I received news that the Galaxy FM studio had been raided by police and that Community Broadcaster Dr Aboo had been arrested and taken to Walworth Police Station .
The incident apparently took place earliar that morning which explained why Galaxy FM was not transmitting on the FM dial at all that day
I later heard via email and via an on air broadcast on another community radio station Ban2Radio that Dr Aboo had been released from Walworth Police Station he had been released around 4pm that same day.
Galaxy FM are now broadcasting again currently only online. I caught a bit of the afternoon talkshow featuring Bongo Tetteh Dr Aboo and Elder Herukutti however I was not able to listen to enough of the show to understand why the police raid took place.
From what I heard I got the impression the police raided the studio for an unjustified reason.

How one pastor is changing the face of religious broadcasting
BY Marcia Dixon
Christian TV station OHTV is proving a hit with a wide range of viewers

ONE MAN aiming to change the face of religious television is Akin Salami. He serves as CEO of one of the UKs most innovative Christian TV stations OH TV.

Launched on the SKY platform in 2008 and owned by the Redeemed Christian Church of God the station is unique in that it features more than just the religious ministry programmes and music shows.

OHTV broadcasts provide a wide range of entertaining wholesome programmes that are not necessarily religious in the hope of appealing to a broad range of people.

Sharing the reasoning behind this new approach to religious TV Akin stated OH TV was launched in June 2008 with a mandate to deliver the good news to people who would not ordinarily tune in to a channel in the religious genre on the SKY satellite platform. Public acceptance was initially slow as our proposition as a c...

The struggle to save Black radio

By Betsey PiettePhiladelphiaPublished Mar 21 2010 900 PM
A spirited program addressing the tactics used by corporate media to undermine Black radio was held in Philadelphia March 9. It was attended by activists already involved in efforts to stem this tide and others concerned over how to keep peoples news and culture alive and thriving.
The program hosted by the Philadelphia International Action Center and the Prometheus Radio Project featured Iyanna Nana Soul Jones and USavior Washington from Black Waxx Multimedia. It was also the Philadelphia premier of an exciting documentary produced in 2008 by Washington entitled Disappearing Voices The Decline of Black Radio.
Following the movie screening Jones and Washington were joined on a panel by Cody Anderson station manager of WURD and former owner of WHAT radio Andalusia Knoll from the Prometheus Radio Project Berta JoubertCeci of the Peoples Video Network and Jasper Jones with West Philadelphia...

Report on the attack of an African Descendent Community Radio Station in Honduras
Though these events took place a few months ago I thought it might interest us in the UK as well as those in other parts of the diaspora

Arson attack on community radio station previously targeted by coup supporters
RSFIFEX A community radio station that serves the AfroCaribbean Garifuna community in the Atlanticcoast town of Triunfo de la Cruz was ransacked and torched on the morning of 6 January 2010. The station called Faluma Bimetu or Radio Coco Dulce has often been threatened because of its opposition to the June 2009 coup d233tat and to real estate projects in the region. The arson attack on Faluma Bimetu confirms that news media that are independent or opposed to the coup are still in danger Reporters Without Borders said. The threat is all the greater for community radio stations which are not recognised by Honduran Law. The press freedom organisation added The government should help Faluma...
